My Great Grandmother

Kate Foster (nee Larkin)
Kate was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire on 5th November
1880. Her parents were Patrick Larkin an Irishman (son of
Thomas Larkin & Catherine Corkern) & Sarah Oakden, a
Staffordshire lass (daughter of Richard Oakden & Sarah
Milward). Her birth certificate states that she was born at
Park Street, Hasland and that her father was a furnace man.
Kate was baptised at the Parish Church, Derby Road,
Chesterfield on 19th May 1881. The entry reads ...

she married Fred. Workhouse records state ... Kate Larkin
was admitted into the Union Workhouse,
Chesterfield on 5th April 1899. She was a
Roman Catholic and a Mill Hand from
Chesterfield. Her daughter May was born in
the workhouse on Saturday 6th May 1899 after
breakfast & before dinner. Kate left the
workhouse of her own accord on May 20th 1899.
It's not known if Fred was the father of May as her birth
certificate has a line where the father's name should be!
Fred & Kate's other children were, Fred,
Frank, George, Kate, Frances, Elizabeth, Jessie, Ada
(being my paternal grandmother), John, Thomas, Percy
& Edward. Kate died on 12th July 1946 and was buried
in Hasland Church. On Friday 19th July the Derbyshire
Times published an obituary under the title of
'Grassmoor'. Mrs Kate Foster (65), The Bungalow, West
Hill, Grassmoor died on Friday. A native of Chesterfield,
she came to Grassmoor 24 yrs ago and, with her husband,
converted the Old Comrades' Hut into a charming
residence. The funeral was at Hasland Church on
Tuesday. In the Ackowledgments column - Mr F Foster
and family, Grassmoor, wish to thank friends, neigbours
and the Nurse & Doctor for kindness & sympathy
in their bereavement and floral tributes sent.
