I found this on Google this morning with the help of Heather from the Lancashire Rootsweb List.
An early photograph of a postman circa 1840 wearing a cape & top hat. Before postage stamps, he would have to collect payment for each individual letter and deliver post before the introduction of letterboxes.
On the old occupations website it doesn't have a postman but does have a post boy:
1) Carried mail
2) Guard who travelled on the mail coach
3) Outrider travelling with the coach or a Postillion
